Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has been thrown into mourning following the sudden death of a 400-level medical student, Oreoluwa Emmanuel Adewole, who reportedly passed away during a clinical viva examination at the institution’s College of Health Sciences.

According to a statement issued by the university’s spokesperson, Abiodun Olarewaju, the tragic incident occurred after the student complained of chest pain while undergoing the examination. He was said to have collapsed shortly afterward.

Olarewaju explained that lecturers and fellow students at the venue immediately made efforts to resuscitate him, and he was attended to without delay. Despite these interventions, he could not be revived.

The university described the incident as deeply shocking, noting that it has left the academic community in grief and disbelief, particularly among colleagues in the medical faculty.

Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire, on behalf of the Governing Council, Senate, staff, and students, commiserated with the family of the deceased, describing the loss as painful and irreparable.

The institution added that it is engaging relevant authorities and the bereaved family to better understand the circumstances surrounding the death, while also providing necessary support during the difficult period.
