The Oyo State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has disclosed that the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) influenced its decision to delay the commencement of its planned industrial action.

According to the union, although concerns over the abduction of teachers and pupils in Oriire Local Government Area had already prompted discussions about a strike, officials chose to postpone the action to avoid disrupting candidates participating in the ongoing WAEC examinations.

The NUT explained that the welfare and academic future of students were carefully considered before the decision was taken, stressing that the union did not want examination candidates to suffer additional setbacks despite the prevailing security challenges.

However, following continued concerns over the safety of teachers and learners, the union eventually directed members in public primary and secondary schools across the state to embark on an indefinite strike.

The union reiterated its demand for the immediate rescue of the abducted victims and called on security agencies and the state government to strengthen security measures around schools, particularly in vulnerable communities.

Education stakeholders have expressed concern that the worsening security situation could further disrupt teaching and learning if urgent action is not taken. Many parents have also called for increased protection for schools to ensure that children can continue their education in a safe environment.

The development highlights the growing tension between maintaining uninterrupted academic activities and addressing the security threats facing educational institutions in parts of the country.
